Sand filter, mainly utilizing quartz sand as the media, is one type of adsorptive water treatment device applied the earliest and most widely in petroleum industry. At the early stage, sand filter was used for water treatment in most oilfields. It was categorized as fixed pore sand filter equipment in terms of its physical property. The disadvantage of sand filter is easy in adsorption but difficult in desorption. The main problem with sand filter is that the non-changing “reverse flushing” cannot change pore structure of filtering bed. Although quartz sand is ideal filtering media, it is heavy by weight, unsuitable in flushing mode, the so-called imagined “boiling-bed” desorption cannot be achieved in China to this day. It is still fixed pore structure sand filter. In addition, filtering bed of conventional sand filter consists of multi-layer selected different grain-sized cobble, gravel, coarse sand and fine sand from up to down. Its complex structure makes layer-mixing incidental in flushing process. When it occurs, sand filter works to total standstill, some of mixed sand seeps down to tray, making recovery quite difficult. The seeped sand has to be fished out through manhole, cleaned, sieved to different particles and then laid on respective layers. What a troublesome job. In particular, flushing and desorbing polymer-contaminated water discharged from polymer-filled oilfield is a difficult problem worldwide. Flushing and desorbing sand by hand at least once or twice a year and subsequent cleaning in workshop and stockpiling creates serious secondary pollution. Under the circumstance, the equipment works for long time in serious condition which requires immediate service and attendance. Apart from this, the 750mm thick bedding layer in 1200mm thick sand filter bed makes the effective adsorptive layer as thin as 450mm. Bedding material fills the most space of sand filter, reducing filtration to a great deal. In view of the problem, since the middle of 1980s, filter manufacturers in China tried to replace quartz sand with walnut shell particle by imitating foreign practice, in a bid to achieve boiling-bed desoprtion, thus to solve the desorptive problem of sand filter. However, contrary to what was inteded, desorption remained a problem due to lipophilicity and oil-water repellency of walnut shell. Although sand filter was applied since long, used and innovated times and again in many oilfields, reverse flushing had never changed other than filtration material selection, increase or decrease in quantity or substitution, ingradient adjustment and increase in layer etc. none with substantial effect, not to say the substantial solution of the problem. At present, detergent input in large dosage is the only way to maintain normal operation of filter. Therefore, renovation of oildfield contaminated water treatment and filtration technology becomes imperative.
